$5.3 Million in Cap Space

After locking down Tomas Fleischmann to a much more reasonable one year pact of $2.6 million for next season, the Capitals are now looking at the trade and UFA landscape to round out their roster for the upcoming 2010-11 season.

After inking Flash, only hours prior to his arbitration hearing, George McPhee set about addressing the need to add grit and toughness…

Fleischmann to Make His Case at Arbitration on July 28

The Capitals have 1 RFA left to sign with $8,555,704 left to spend.

Sounds pretty simple, right?

Not so fast.

Although I will agree that the Caps are by no means in cap trouble, I do believe they are feeling a bit of heat under the collar.

There are currently 19 players signed for the 2010-11 season, which sounds fine, excep…

Gordon, Schultz and Fehr Sign

As I wrote at the beginning of the week, the Capitals have been a very quiet team during this off-season, specifically during the UFA period.

All of that changed on Tuesday, when George McPhee set to work on locking up his important RFA’s and giving better definition and clarity to the Capitals lineup for 2010-11.

McPhee’s first move was to lock up Boyd Gor…

Christmas is July

With only hours to go before the flood gates open and ‘tampering’ is no longer considered a dirty word, it’s time to re-visit what the Washington Capitals stand to gain out of this season’s crop of free agents.

The Caps currently have $43.4 million committed to 14 players for the 2010-11 season, leaving them with a juicy $15.98 million to play with as of noon today.

Bu…

The Beginning of the Future

Time to get down to brass tacks.

Despite the devastating playoff losses that have currently scarred the most recent generation of Caps fans, the reality is that this team is closer to building a winner than ever before.

I say closer because the depth of this team lies solely in their youth. And with that youth comes a lot of high quality talent. Enough of whi…

…Decide to Make a Trade

Since the dawn of the CBA controlled NHL whereby teams must govern themselves within a set salary limit, the ability to build a winner by simply spending dollars has gone by the wayside. There is no longer room in the budget for teams to spend more than others to obtain a competitive advantage, therefore teams have been forced into building a winner throu…

Round 1 was bedlam. Pure Madness.

But, can the Habs do it again?

No doubt about it, the Canadiens made history in Round 1 with their incredible 7 game victory over the Washington Capitals, but w…

An Owner’s Resolve – Tomorrow is Another Day

With the idea of a gloriously successful season coming to a crashing halt still buzzing through the minds of the players and fans of the Washington Capitals, one man has enough fore-sight to call it as he sees it.

That man is majority owner of the Washington Capitals, Ted Leonsis.

Affectionately known as “Uncle Ted” to many of the Washington…

THE BIGGEST PLAYOFF UPSET OF ALL TIME?

What do yo think?

Simply unreal. They might as well just give Jaroslav Halak the Conn Smythe right now.

Habs stun Caps in 7. Who saw that coming?

Update:

Tom Poti has been officially ruled out of Game 7 due to the eye injury that forced him to leave Game 6 in Montreal, so as a result the Washington Capitals have recalled Karl Alzner from the Hershey Bears.

The timing couldn’t be better as adding a defensive, physical presence could be just what the Caps blue line needs.

Either way, having Carlson and Alzner on the blue line was a…

Tis the Season?

What else can be said?

Jaroslav Halak has played so well over the last two games that the city of Montreal thinks that it’s back in the middle of winter.

Why do I say that?

Because Halak has spun this series on its head and, in the process, has seemingly turned the weather in Montreal back into winter.

Hey, maybe hell froze over?

That is what many said i…

Hope Rests on Halak’s Shoulders

Jacques Martin continues his flip flop in nets this evening as he returns Jaroslav Halak to the Habs crease and relegates Carey back to the bench, but is this a sign of a guy who knows how to motivate a team in this NHL or a sign of someone grasping at straws?

I only ask the question because with all of the odd-ball decisions that Martin has made over th…
