In what was the first in what will likely be many “must win” games as the Flames near the end of the season, the team was finally able to post a victory against the Colorado Avalanche for just the first time this season. In the four previous games they were simply unable to solve the Avs Craig Anderson as the puck-stopper was able to frustrate the Calgary shooters at every turn. Last night, howeve…

It’s not over yet but it may be soon. The Flames looked like they were coming together in winning four straight games after dropping their first post-Olympic contest but have now dropped two in a row in much the same fashion that lead to the nine game losing streak earlier in the year. Once again the lack of offensive punch on this team has become an issue.

Despite what may be said by detractor…

Last you heard from me, I was in a limerick sort of mood, inspired by St. Patty’s Day and the Lightning’s own Facebook contest which, apparently, I did not win. (To that I say, “Fiddlesticks!” And to any mid-week St. Pat’s, by the way, a double “Fiddlesticks!” as well.)

I’ll return to prose today, in an effort to sort out my jumbled thoughts on this and that.

—We’ll start…

I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece game but for the first 20 minutes it sure looked like one. With a strong start in a match against the division rival, Vancouver took Calgary out of the game early and held on to get the win.

The first period had all the makings of a playoff atmosphere and game with great scoring chances, incredible puck movement, huge saves and hits. However, it was one side…

The Flames are once again on the outside looking in at the play-off picture as they were overtaken on the weekend by the Red Wings and then lost to the Canucks late Sunday. The loss comes after the team was starting to build some confidence after putting up four straight victories in order to put themselves back into a play-off position. Obviously a team can’t win every game, but it’s how the team…

The division title will not be decided by this game nor will post season eligibility or final standings but how important is the game to Vancouver and Calgary? It’s the first match up since laser-gate between two division rivals who seem to elevate their play when playing each other.

The key factors tonight seem to be that there are 6 new Flames who have not been part of this rivalry in the…

Ovechkin Gets 5 + Game Misconduct

Pop quiz hot shot, was Alex’s hit as bad as Maxim Lapierre’s hit on Scott Nichol…or as bad as Matt Cooke’s hit on Marc Savard, etc, etc?

Let’s have a look:

Lapierre Boards Nichol

Cooke Destroys Savard

How do these hits all compare?

This is now THE HOT-BUTTON ISSUE in the NHL and with so many people worried about the safety of th…

See you in June?

A lot has been made of both of these teams throughout this long and arduous regular season, but, with less than a month left to play, we are finally going to get a look at how these two teams stack up against one another.

The Blackhawks are the youthful mirror of the Capitals. They have become the new kids on the block in the Western Conference and have such a young, t…

Duncan Keith, Clear Cut Favorite to Win Norris

In continuing with our series of fan polls as we close out the NHL’s regular season, it is clear to see that, among Hockeybuzz readers, Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks is the run-away favorite to win the Norris Trophy.

Although I split the Norris poll into two categories, most of you agreed that the top 3 candidates were clearly ahead o…

Since we’re a step closer to the official death of the 2009-10 Tampa Bay Lightning after last night’s overtime loss in Toronto left them six points out of the playoff picture with 16 games left to play, I thought I’d forgo anything serious today, in an effort to lighten the mood a bit.

Through their official Facebook page, the Lightning are promoting a limerick contest and offering ticket…

Miikka Kiprusoff stopped everything (with a little help from the crossbar) and the Flames got goals from unlikely sources as they extended their win streak to four at home against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.

It was a much needed victory as it allowed the Flames to keep their tenuous hold on the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western conference as the Red Wings won to keep pace. The w…

As you may have noticed, I have been going on a little bit of a poll kick as we near the playoffs. Considering we have completed over three quarters of the season now, I thought it would be best to start whittling down the key performers of the season and t…

It was looked on as a very important game. A chance to take the eighth and final play-off spot back (for the time being) against a team that most feel will still make the post-season in the Detroit Red Wings. Now that they’re healthy the Wings have become a formidable team, and they are still looked at as a team that could do some post-season damage.

As for the Flames, they had a chance to catc…

Who is Your Cup Favorite?

With approximately 15 games remaining in the NHL’s regular season, there doesn’t seem to be a better time than right now to find out who YOU think has the best chance of winning the Stanley Cup?

Here is a set of 3 polls, based on the 3 brackets of current contenders(based on current point standings and pre-season odds):

The hot topic right now for the Tampa Bay Lightning might be Steven Stamkos, thanks to the hot hand that has him on pace for a 51-goal sophomore season.

The impact of Steve Downie as a well-rounded force, offensively, physically and otherwise, might be the surprise story of their season.

And a reinvigorated Vincent Lecavalier down the stretch, sparked by the under-the-radar arrival of Teddy…

10 goals in two games. The last time the Flames scored at least 5 goals in consecutive games was in October. the 20th and 24th respectively when they won 6-3 against the Blue Jackets and then 5-2 against the Oilers at home to complete their first ten games with a 7-2-1 record.

“The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning…

So, the Jeff Vinik era as owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning got off to an 0-1 start with Thursday’s loss to Washington.

So what?

The Caps are, well, the Caps. And, though there was certainly some sloppiness, the Lightning hung tight in that game, battling back from several deficits and showing some real character throughout.

A timely save or two down the stretch would have aided the cau…

18 teams were in action on Thursday night in the National Hockey League. Home teams finished with a sparkling 7-1-1 record, with the Stars suffering the only loss in regulation among the nine hosts.
