Let me tell ya, hockey fans itâs ugly work but somebodyâs gotta do it. Somebody has to let Gary Bettman know weâre still out here, celebrating every fight and check, and wretching over every bad call and silly suspension, as well as all the other stuff he doesnât want us to notice. After 15 years of hockey reportage, most of it reporting on the physical aspect of the game, I feel qualified…
Who is Your Cup Favorite?
With approximately 15 games remaining in the NHL’s regular season, there doesn’t seem to be a better time than right now to find out who YOU think has the best chance of winning the Stanley Cup?
Here is a set of 3 polls, based on the 3 brackets of current contenders(based on current point standings and pre-season odds):

The hot topic right now for the Tampa Bay Lightning might be Steven Stamkos, thanks to the hot hand that has him on pace for a 51-goal sophomore season.
The impact of Steve Downie as a well-rounded force, offensively, physically and otherwise, might be the surprise story of their season.
And a reinvigorated Vincent Lecavalier down the stretch, sparked by the under-the-radar arrival of Teddy…
Yeah, Scott Hartnell misses Scottie Uphall.
And Joffrey Lupul, too.
Hartnell ain’t got no mojo. There’s no glide to his stride, no dip to his hip. The swagger is gone.
From 30-goal breakout year in ‘08-09 to bust this season. The Flyers winger is truly a ghost of his former self.
You watch against Toronto and frankly, it was one of his worst games of the year. He just looks lost on the…
The last two seasons have ended with a frantic playoff push, only to come up short by slim margins, perpetuating an absurd and unacceptable playoff drought. The Panther’s swan dive before and after the Olympic break, losing seven straight, has now put them in an all-to-familiar position of relying on luck and perfect play to squeak into the eighth playoff spot in the East.
The prediction was t…
The Flyers did what they had to do last night, getting a critical four-game homestand off on the right foot. It was good to see Simon Gagne continue his recent roll and even nicer to see Dan Carcillo get kudos for efforts.
Say what you will about Carcillo’s periodic meltdowns. With a couple much publicized exceptions — and I still maintain that his nine-minute penalty and subsequent suspensio…
PREVIEW (7:30 AM)
With losses in their last two games, it’s crucial for the Flyers to get back on the winning track in their fourth game of the post-Olympic stretch drive. Tonight, they return home to play the woeful Toronto Maple Leafs, who have already won a game against the Flyers this season (an ugly 4-0 shutout). Tonight’s tilt is the third of four meetings and marks the start of a four-ga…
“The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning…
So, the Jeff Vinik era as owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning got off to an 0-1 start with Thursdayâs loss to Washington.
So what?
The Caps are, well, the Caps. And, though there was certainly some sloppiness, the Lightning hung tight in that game, battling back from several deficits and showing some real character throughout.
A timely save or two down the stretch would have aided the cau…
One of the most positive developments to emerge from the first three games of the post-Olympic stretch run has been the offensive play of Simon Gagne. The 30-year-old left winger seems to finally be recovering his timing and confidence in scoring three goals and four points in the last three games.
Last night, especially early in the game, I thought the line of Ville Leino and Danny Briere fla…
18 teams were in action on Thursday night in the National Hockey League. Home teams finished with a sparkling 7-1-1 record, with the Stars suffering the only loss in regulation among the nine hosts.

PREVIEW (10 AM)
The Flyers will play for the third time in four nights tonight when they travel to Buffalo to take on the struggling Sabres. Buffalo has been in a swoon that has seen the club drop eight of its last nine games and fall out of first place in the Northeast Division. Meanwhile, the Flyers had their five-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday in an ugly 7-4 loss to the Panthers….
Preview (7:45 AM)
Fresh off a huge third period performance in last night’s 7-2 win in Tampa Bay, the Flyers will complete their Florida swing tonight with a tilt against the Panthers. This is the fourth and final meetings between the teams. The Panthers have won two of the first three games.
The Panthers were idle last night. The club lost its first game after Olympic break, dropping a 4-2…
Hop in and out all day for trade deadline discussion, general puck chat, questions, comments and, with any luck, some breaking news from JJ …
We can even talk about last night’s 7-2 thumping the Lightning received from Philly, if we must. (Hey, at least we got another double dose of “Hammer Time”!

Blue Jackets blew another game when they had the lead going into the 3rd period. Grant Clitsome had 2 assists for the Blue Jackets in his NHL debut but the other assist he gave to the Canucks that allowed them to tie up the game will be hard to forget.
All in all, both teams played like garbage and it was very sloppy. It’s what you expect after a 2 week break and several players wondering…
Join me at your leisure on deadline day here.
I’ll be in and out throughout the day, passing along whatever word I get on any potential or actual Lightning moves and my usual snide commentary on whatever else is going on tomorrow.
We’ll have plenty to discuss, I’m sure.
Stay tuned.

Would prefer being on the scene back in Philly at trade deadline but we’re in Tampa.
Not that we would have any greater access but we’d be closer to the Flyers’ war room.
Every indication is that Nashville wants a lot for d-man Dan Hamhuis.
One person told me today that the Flyers are making a mistake by not having a starting goalie going into the playoffs who has won a playoff round….
Preview (10:45 AM)
With the Olympic break behind them, the Flyers will embark on the grueling stretch drive of the regular season. The club carries a four-game winning streak into tonight’s game in Tampa Bay, although there’s not likely to be any carryover momentum this far removed from the home-and-home sweeps of New Jersey and Montreal prior to the break. It will now be up to the Flyers to pu…
Itâs Game Night in Nashville as the Predators begin the 21 game rush to the playoffs with a tilt against the Edmonton Oilers as the rechristened Bridgestone Arena. It is the first game of 17 in March for the Preds with 10 of them at home and a chance to solidify their playoff spot in the friendly confines.
The Predators began the post-Olympic push by jumping into the trade pool, closing a dea…
As the trade deadline quickly approaches, anticipation of possible trades heat up and rumors swirl on every internet site that even remotely covers hockey. Now the question is will the trade deadline live up to the hype like the Winter Olympics did? I doubt it as the big boys have already been traded and there are few big names that will be changing addresses.
Since I cover the Blue Jacket…
