The Flyers’ decision to take a chance on Nikolai Zherdev is a lot more justifiable now that it has been learned that the deal is just for one season and will pay him $2 million. In addition to its potential immediate impact on the lineup, the one-year deal also gives the club the opportunity to evaluate both Zherdev and Ville Leino (who will become an unrestricted free agent after the season) an…
(Panotch is on Holiday but … ):
Much like fans across Flyerdom, I’ve had a hard time figuring out just what the Flyers’ off-season plan really is. It seems to me, they’re throwing darts.
They took a chance on d-man Andrej Meszaros, who’s had a couple downer seasons in a row, and passed up a number of better players.
They’ve written off the loss in the Stanley Cup Final to a “bad” goal…
With nothing new to talk about on the Nikolai Zherdev or trade fronts, I will devote today’s blog to discussing the top defense prospects in the Flyers’ system. The organization has done a poor job over the years at developing homegrown defensemen who become long-term NHL contributors in Philadelphia.
It is very telling that the entire projected starting defense next season will be comprised o…
I asked the Flyers if they were not going to announce the Zherdev signing until a Gagne trade had been made, and their official response was “Nothing to Report re: any transactions…
stay tuned…
Simon Gagne said yesterday that he has not waived his no-trade clause. That does not, however, mean that the Flyers have not spoken with Gagne about getting the go-ahead to seek trade possibilities or gotten his imput on teams to which he’d accept a trade.

News that Nikolai Zherdev had decided to play for the Philadelphia Flyers first broke in Russia yesterday, appearing on the Sport…
- Development camp is underway at Sportsplex, unfortunately my day job requirements have prevented me from getting out there⦠Iâm hoping to sneak away for a quick peek today and will be there over the weekend. Todayâs schedule includes an on-ice session that should begin around 10am.
- Kudos to Preds EVP Chris Parker and Preds Broadcasting Director Bob Kohl for the new deal with Fox Spo…
I was told very early this morning that the Flyers will make a bid for Dan Ellis.
The fact negotiations w/MTL ended without an offer last night, made it clear he’ll test the market this afternoon.
Here’s my story on CSNPhilly.com:

According to reports from Tim Panaccio and other and sources with whom I’ve spoken today, the Flyers are poised to re-sign goaltender Michael Leighton and have him compete for the starting job next season. From what I heard today, the club would still prefer not to go into the season with Leighton, Brian Boucher and Johan Backlund as their sole options and, as such, is considering bringing in ot…
UPDATED:
Flyers-Boston have talked about Tim Thomas, according to NHL executive sources.
Flyers would have to move 1-2 players to accomodate $5 million cap hit … Sources believe, in the end, the Flyers will settle on Michael Leighton rather than move a major player.
One more thing. An NHL exec says that to sign Dan Hamhuis, the Flyers will likely have to move Braydon Coburn. The two sid…
Paul Holmgren said he would meet with Michael Leighton’s agent this week in LA. He did this morning in downtown at the JW Marriott.
The two sat within shouting distance of myself in what is one of the largest, most crowded lobbies I have ever seen. It’s like walking into a mall at the JW; it’s that big.
Liut told me there is “sincere” interest on the Flyers part in re-signing his client. H…
There are few NHL stars who simply hit the ground running upon their arrival in the league and emerged steadily as dominant players in the world’s top league. Most players go through ups and downs in their early seasons and then reach a jump-off point from which their careers take off.
In the case of Claude Giroux, we will start to find out next season if his outstanding run during the Stanle…
I just had this link sent to me. Poor Philly fan. I’d kill some one if they did this to me. One more reason not to buy Bose.
If you’ve seen it sorry for the repeat….
There is a school of thought out there that the HBO documentary on the Broad Street Bullies might have hurt Fred Shero’s chances of getting in the Hockey Hall of Fame this year.
I don’t buy it.
Shero was up in the past and didn’t make it. He was up again this year. I nominated him for 2010. Anyone – any person, not just hockey writers _ can nominate someone to the HHoF.
I felt confident S…
While awaiting the release of the NHL schedule today, Iâve been doing a little pondering.
You are hearing the name Eric Lindros a lot recently. A debate is raging over his potential nomination to the Hockey Hall of Fame. On one side you have the power, the potential and the occasional flash of brilliance that came from the Big E, the participation in one of the great line names of all time i…
If the NHLPA elects to exercise its option to inflate the salary cap by 5% for the 2010-11 season, thereby increasing the cap to the $58-59 million range, the Flyers are not going to be nearly as bad off this offseason as some in the media have reported.
The club is still likely to attempt to get rid of at least one big salary among their forwards in order to prevent bumping up against the cap…
The trades between Philadelphia, New Jersey and Nashville that saw the negotiating rights to soon-to-be-UFA Dan Hamhuis go to Philadelphia, Ryan Parent return to Nashville and Jason Arnott return to New Jersey reflect the connections between certain organizations and their former players. These deals, to go along with the surprising Jaroslav Halak deal to St. Louis are the first of what is expecte…
The acquisition of Dan Hamhuis to the Flyers’ defense corps gives the Flyers the best 1-to-5 group that I ever remember the team assembling. From what I understand, Hamhuis’ addition will not affect the club’s efforts to resign restricted free agent Braydon Coburn (who made $1.3 million last season), nor will the club actively shop Matt Carle (who has two seasons left at a $3.4 million cap hit)….
Well, it seems this off-season for the Predators won’t be so quiet after all. Not just one but two trades to discuss today. I guess the Predators GM David Poile woke up today and finally decided to take some action after yet another 1st Round exit.
Trade #1: This one I don’t find all that significant. Dan Hamhuis’ rights get traded to (wait for itâ¦.) Philadelphia. The deal does send Predator…
So much for a quiet weekendâ¦
The news of Dan Hamhuis being traded to Nashville north was not really surprising. After Francis Bouillon was extended, you knew that the budget for Hamhuis just wasnât there. Bringing Ryan Parent back means that almost all of the assets traded for Peter Forsberg are back with the Preds.
But then, the news of the Jason Arnott trade broke⦠and all hell broke…
Well, the Preds obviously are dumping salary to make a larger move and re-signing Ryan Parent is going to be a lot easier as an RFA than re-signing Dan Hamhuis, who is now a Flyer.
When NSH didn’t re-up at the trade deadline you knew Hamhuis was a goner this summer.
Wade Arnott, the agent for Hamhuis, says contract talks begin in earnest on MON. Groundwork was laid this morning, he said….
