It appears Notre Dame standout D-man Ian Cole is getting his academics in order before eventually signing a contract to join the organization that made him a 1st round selection back in 2007.

It appeared Cole would have signed with the Blues before the end of the week but it looks like that won’t be happening. This shouldn’t suggest he won’t sign before the end of the school year but tha…

Word is former 1st round pick and Notre Dame standout Ian Cole will sign an entry level contract as early as today. The D-man is likely to report directly to the Blues AHL affiliate in Peoria.

Yesterday’s story…..

Ty Conklin gets back between the pipes for the Blues tonight in New York after consecutive sub par performances by Chris Mason. It didn’t help Mason that the Blues sat on th…

As playoff hopes for the Tampa Bay Lightning fade quickly away, the attention of us critics will start to turn toward pinpointing just where things went wrong.

Scoring depth has been a concern all season. When one line’s going, well, that’s been it, for the most part.

The goaltending has been wobbly, particularly of late, as both Antero Niittymaki and Mike Smith have had some serious ups…

On February 12th, I wrote that Kings fans should demand a refund for the way they played against Edmonton. A Kings executive called me the next day and told me that I was “ranting” and that the “sky is not falling”.

I wonder how I should I write my blog now after the Kings have won just 3 times in their last 8 games following the Olympic break, have lost 3 of their last 4 at home and ha…

The 2010 Ontario Hockey League playoffs kicked off on Thursday night with the Windsor Spitfires opening their defence of the J. Ross Robertson Cup championship that they won last May. The Spitfires hosted the Erie Otters in the opening round of the playoffs and opened up with a convincing 6-2 victory. Meanwhile, their primary threat to steal the championship, the regular season champion Barrie Co…

Ty Conklin gets back between the pipes for the Blues tonight in New York after consecutive sub par performances by Chris Mason. It didn’t help Mason that the Blues sat on their backsides close to the entire first period vs. Colorado but I think it’s safe to say Mason would admit he could have played better.

I realize Mason’s career numbers against Colorado are pretty impressive, but this…

Ten days ago I asked if the Kings could avoid their annual choke-a-thon.

They’re 3-4 since the Olympic break.

Phoenix is 5-1
Detroit is 6-2
Nashville is 5-3
Colorado is 4-3

While the Kings broadcasters are quick to point out that the Kings haven’t “hit their stride” since coming back from the Olympic break, apparently most of the other teams in the West have.

So what’s wrong?

The…

Last you heard from me, I was in a limerick sort of mood, inspired by St. Patty’s Day and the Lightning’s own Facebook contest which, apparently, I did not win. (To that I say, “Fiddlesticks!” And to any mid-week St. Pat’s, by the way, a double “Fiddlesticks!” as well.)

I’ll return to prose today, in an effort to sort out my jumbled thoughts on this and that.

—We’ll start…

There has been a lot of discussion in recent weeks about the Blues success killing penalties. A lot factors come into play here. To me a lot of comes down to how prepared the Blues are in terms of their understanding of the opponents tendencies on the power play. This is where Assistant Coach Brad Shaw comes into play. This guy has done an admirable job coaching up the Blues PK unit since joining…

I could whine (which I often do) about the refs disallowing Justin Williams goal because of what they deemed goaltender interference. (no penalty called on the play either)

I could whine that a few minutes later the exact same thing happened to the Kings only the refs allowed Nashville’s goal to count despite protests from Jonathan Quick.

“5 minutes earlier, we don’t even touch Rinne so I…

Ovechkin Gets 5 + Game Misconduct

Pop quiz hot shot, was Alex’s hit as bad as Maxim Lapierre’s hit on Scott Nichol…or as bad as Matt Cooke’s hit on Marc Savard, etc, etc?

Let’s have a look:

Lapierre Boards Nichol

Cooke Destroys Savard

How do these hits all compare?

This is now THE HOT-BUTTON ISSUE in the NHL and with so many people worried about the safety of th…

The mainstream media flat out has a disdain for hockey. Hockey fans in the USA know it and are used to it, we look longingly north to see the incredible coverage Canada gives our sport, we wonder why and are thankful at the same time because that lack of coverage is why HockeyBuzz exists, because if the MSM ever caught wind of how truly passionate and hungry for news hockey fans are… well… w…

See you in June?

A lot has been made of both of these teams throughout this long and arduous regular season, but, with less than a month left to play, we are finally going to get a look at how these two teams stack up against one another.

The Blackhawks are the youthful mirror of the Capitals. They have become the new kids on the block in the Western Conference and have such a young, t…

A year ago, the Ducks were fighting their way back into the playoff picture and the Kings were just realizing that in spite of their best efforts, they would probably not squeak into the 2009 playoffs.

Fast forward a year and the Ducks are clearly out of the playoffs. Some of us predicted this early and were already saying a month and a half into the season that the Ducks wouldn’t be able…

Duncan Keith, Clear Cut Favorite to Win Norris

In continuing with our series of fan polls as we close out the NHL’s regular season, it is clear to see that, among Hockeybuzz readers, Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks is the run-away favorite to win the Norris Trophy.

Although I split the Norris poll into two categories, most of you agreed that the top 3 candidates were clearly ahead o…

With Jonathan Bernier back in the Kings net for the first time in two years and Justin Williams skating on the 1st line for the first time since breaking his leg in December, the Kings played a solid game against a Stars team desperate to make the playoffs.

After spending years getting waxed by Dallas, its nice to see the Kings rebound to take all 5 games so far this season.

Newcomer Fredrik…

The St. Louis Blues are in the midst of negotiating a contract with former first round pick and Notre Dame standout Ian Cole.

Concussion problems limited Cole to just 30 games played this season but word is the sturdy D-man has checked out ok and is not suffering any lingering effects.

Even though Cole is a smart kid and academics remain a priority for he and his family, sources close to…

Since we’re a step closer to the official death of the 2009-10 Tampa Bay Lightning after last night’s overtime loss in Toronto left them six points out of the playoff picture with 16 games left to play, I thought I’d forgo anything serious today, in an effort to lighten the mood a bit.

Through their official Facebook page, the Lightning are promoting a limerick contest and offering ticket…

As you may have noticed, I have been going on a little bit of a poll kick as we near the playoffs. Considering we have completed over three quarters of the season now, I thought it would be best to start whittling down the key performers of the season and t…
