The first time I met new Tampa Bay Lightning owner, Jeff Vinik, was a very casual encounter prior to the last home game of this past season as we both stepped onto the elevator that ascends to the St. Pete Times Forum press box. After simple introductions, the conversation quickly turned to what was on everyone’s mind that night: Steven Stamkos’ pursuit of the 50-goal mark.

I proclaimed how…

Sure, the San Jose Sharks have their work cut out for them after falling at home in game one of the Western Conference Final and, yes, Philadelphia’s lead over Montreal is just one game despite the lopsided victory in the East opener.

But isn’t there something at least moderately intriguing for Tampa Bay Lightning fans about the possibility of a Dan Boyle/Matt Carle showdown in the Stanley…

I know that you folks want some Rangers-related news but this is the best I could do. It involves Sean Avery and Aaron Voros. More from The New York Post:

Lindsay Lohan started another fight in a club—this time with New York Ranger skaters Aaron Voros and Sean Avery at 1Oak. The troubled starlet threw a drink over Voros’ model girlfriend, Jessica Stam, and then tried to get all three thrown out of the Wildfox fall-collection party the other night. A spy relates, “Lindsay threw a fit because she wanted to be at their table near the DJ. But she claimed she didn’t want to sit with Aaron and said, ‘He’s my ex-boyfriend. I don’t want him anywhere near me.’ Voros denied knowing her. A drink then flew in Jessica’s face, and Lindsay demanded their table be moved out. Club bosses refused and tried to calm her down. Stam, Voros and Avery were shocked but didn’t retaliate, and Lindsay left shortly afterward.”

Nice, right?

Suffice it to say, the rest did me well.

I stayed away exactly a month, which was the minimum I’d promised myself. The itch was there to return early on a few different occasions but I resisted – made myself hold back – and I feel recharged and ready to tackle another active off-season for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

But first, some shameless self-promotion …

Over the course of the…

Get With the Program

9, May 2010

This past weekend, I was luck enough to do an e-mail interview with Chris Wassel of The Program. Chris was kind enough to take time out of his busy weekend to tell us about how he got into hockey, how he got into blogging, his thoughts on the New Jersey Devils and of course, his take on the Stanley Cup playoffs;

PH: How did you get into hockey?

CW: The funniest thing was I literally got into hockey only because I loved the sheer violence of it. I know that is not the answer some fans like to hear but for me, that is what did it for me. I grew up in the 80’s when hockey was a little more high scoring but still featured players who wanted to literally knock some blocks off. I played competitive hockey from when I was 6 until I was 22 and still play a little here and there to this day. I have not only been hooked ever since that one day in 1981 when I knocked a 6 year old over the bench, I have been HOOKED!

PH: Growing up, who was your favorite team/player?

CW: My favorite was and always is the New Jersey Devils. Now for favorite player, that is undisputed “Warrior King” Scott Stevens.

To reiterate an observation earlier, the common thread of all four Eastern Conference matchups in round 1 was that the team that got the better play between the pipes, went on to win the series. The Sabres-Bruins series was a close, nip and tuck battle, but the perceived gap between Ryan Miller and Tuukka Rask was not there and Buffalo’s feeble offense could not consistently beat the Finnish you…

Per TSN’s Darren Dreger, Leafs assistant GM Dave Nonis is in the mix as a possible replacement for Brian Lawton as the general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Other candidates include Detroit assistant GM Steve Yzerman and former Wild and Flames GM Doug Risebrough.

If Risebrough gets the job, Leaf fans should anxiously await his first trade, Steven Stamkos to Toronto for the rights to Ri…

With the first round nearly completed, the teams that are advancing to the next round have exhibited the common traits that are essential to post-season victory, while the teams that are packing up their equipment and booking tee times displayed some obvious and glaring shortcomings. From great friend of the blog Nicholas Montemagno at The Rangers Tribune:

In 27 games played with the Devils this season, Kovalchuk had just ten goals, in addition to the two he netted in five games played against the Flyers in the quarterfinals. Those are not horrible numbers, obviously, but they are not what we have seen in previous years of his career and they are the only reason why he does not have an atrocious plus/minus rating. His performance in the playoffs this season was below-par, and I think that was the assuring fact that he will not be back with the Devils next season.

This may sound harsh, but Kovalchuk does not give a rat’s tail about the defensive end of the rink. He does not make an effort to backcheck, he does not make an effort to help around by the net, and he is not an option to put on the penalty kill. His only ability is scoring, which he can do quite well, but only when he chooses that he wants to.

People have recently been asking why Kovalchuk did not fit in New Jersey. Well, the Devils, sine their birth, have always been a defense-first team. Kovalchuk does not know how to play a system like that, in fact, he doesn’t know how to play much of any system at all. He is a floater that waits for the puck, and when he gets it, he chooses if he wants to do something with it or not.

It takes a lot of things to win in the post-season. There are many factors that must fall perfectly into place for a team to have a championship run, of that there is no doubt. The talent must be there, the coaching has to be right, the matchups have to work in your favor and you need to be playing your best when it matters most. All of these are important elements that are common to teams that ha…
