By now you’ve probably seen this, but I am going to share it with you anyway in case you haven’t. Apparently three teams asked the Stars about the availability of Mike Modano at the trade deadline. According to Mike Heika, Modano simply didn’t want to leave.
All three teams who inquired are unknown. Modano acknowledged that the Capitals were one of the three, which would have added extra intrig…

As you may have noticed, I have been going on a little bit of a poll kick as we near the playoffs. Considering we have completed over three quarters of the season now, I thought it would be best to start whittling down the key performers of the season and t…
The Stars go down 5-3 tonight in Buffalo, but at least it was an entertaining match. Ryan Miller looked tired, and ideally Dallas should have taken two points out of HSBC arena tonight. However, much like I said after Pittsburgh, tonight’s game is the type where a good team at least pulls a point out.
Tonight, yet again, the good team got both points.
What surprised me is how the Sabres wer…
Who is Your Cup Favorite?
With approximately 15 games remaining in the NHL’s regular season, there doesn’t seem to be a better time than right now to find out who YOU think has the best chance of winning the Stanley Cup?
Here is a set of 3 polls, based on the 3 brackets of current contenders(based on current point standings and pre-season odds):

The hot topic right now for the Tampa Bay Lightning might be Steven Stamkos, thanks to the hot hand that has him on pace for a 51-goal sophomore season.
The impact of Steve Downie as a well-rounded force, offensively, physically and otherwise, might be the surprise story of their season.
And a reinvigorated Vincent Lecavalier down the stretch, sparked by the under-the-radar arrival of Teddy…
I guess the Datsun survived.
Barely though.
Marty Turco was simply amazing tonight. He should have stopped the first goal, but from then on he was electric. The only player to beat him after that was Alexander Ovechkin. This isn’t exactly a crime.
The Stars were pretty lucky to get out of Washington with two points. They were squarely overmatched for 40 minutes, but Turco kept them in th…
The million dollar question among fans and media alike is whether or not the Blues can find a way to slide into the playoffs. It wonât be long before we find out.
Itâs pretty hard to pick apart the way the Blues have been playing as of late. Winners of five of their last six games the Blues have once again asserted themselves into becoming part of the playoff picture.
When talking to B…

Picture yourself driving on an interstate. On the other side of the highway is a massive wreck. One of the vehicles is an 18-wheeler. The other is a Datsun. You know the 18-wheeler is fine, but you just have to see what kind of damager the Datsun took. You’re on the other side. You don’t want to look, but your morbid curiosity keeps you from turning away.
This will be me tonight as…
This is what good teams do.
Good teams, when their backs are against the wall, come out fighting.
I’m, of course, talking about the Penguins. The Stars got out to a 3-1 lead early in the second period only to watch Pittsburgh score the next 5 goals.
What the hell?
After the past two games I thought they had reached the pinnacle of demoralization. Things couldn’t get much worse than 1…
So, the Jeff Vinik era as owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning got off to an 0-1 start with Thursdayâs loss to Washington.
So what?
The Caps are, well, the Caps. And, though there was certainly some sloppiness, the Lightning hung tight in that game, battling back from several deficits and showing some real character throughout.
A timely save or two down the stretch would have aided the cau…

You know you’re in trouble when your own team operated Twitter feed can’t spell the name of a core player right. Well done Stars. I’m sure Loui Ericsson’s parents are proud.
The playoff push is off to a smashing success, right?
These past two games have been the biggest give up games I’ve seen in a long time. You could see the effort early, but as soon as adversity hit the game w…

The trade deadline day bonanza has come and gone once again. The buyers bought, the sellers sold, and the Stars did nothing. They picked up Kari Lehtonen before the Olympic break, and that essentially was the full extent of the trade deadline (unless you count the Steve Ott signing). The Pacific division didn’t rest however.
The Phoenix Coyotes improved significantly. They picked up…
I think some fans are slightly shocked that the St. Louis Blues have so quickly moved on from a player who was so highly regarded just a few short months ago.
When you think about Aaron Palushaj, a former 2nd round pick out of Michigan, you think about a player the organization had categorized as a big part of the future moving forward.
Iâll never forget members of the management staff r…

Caveat Emptor: part or nothing of what you read here will come to pass by 3PM Eastern today.
That is to say, as I’ve said in the past, hockey trade rumor reporting is at best an inexact science. You can identify in very broad terms what a team is trying to do, but the specifics are almost always surprising.
That said, in spite of a tweet by Kevin Allen of USA Today to the contrary last night…
It’s amazing how a two week break can completely kill the momentum of a hockey team. The Stars were riding a season’s best streak, they have a new goalie in tow, and Steve Ott is locked in for four years. Then we get that? Blah. It’s just another game with mediocre defensive zone coverage and crazy line combinations. I’ve read that story before.
The Stars didn’t put up much of a fight in their…
To no surprise Toronto forward Alexei Ponikarovsky has been told he will be moved. Sources close to the Maple Leaf tell me it’s down to 2 or three teams and the deal is likely to do down sometime in the morning. There are a few deals on the table and word is Brian Burke is in the process of deciding which way he wants to go. One team is believed to be the Los Angeles Kings.
Speaking of Toro…

Join me at your leisure on deadline day here.
I’ll be in and out throughout the day, passing along whatever word I get on any potential or actual Lightning moves and my usual snide commentary on whatever else is going on tomorrow.
We’ll have plenty to discuss, I’m sure.
Stay tuned.
